R-J: Titus Lures Education Endorsements |
By Richard Lake - September 4, 2008
The Nevada State Education Association endorsed Democrat Dina Titus in her run for congress Wednesday.
So did the Nevada Faculty Alliance, through its political action committee.
Titus has been a state senator for 20 years and a professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for 30 years. She commonly recieves these endorsements.
The announcement was used as an opportunity to highlight incumbent Republican Rep. Jon Porter's voting record, which the Titus campaign said shows him siding with President Bush 93 percent of the time.

SUN: Big gun comes out for Titus |
By Michael Mishak - September 4, 2008
Dina Titus gracefully accepted the endorsement of the state teachers union Wednesday in her race for Congress, pledging to overhaul No Child Left Behind and increase access to college educations. But the real message of the news conference was the man standing behind her, Rahm Emanuel.
The mere presence of the Chicago congressman, who heads the House Democratic caucus and led his party's efforts to retake Congress two years ago, shows the importance national Democrats have placed on the election for Nevada's 3rd Congressional District.
Titus, a state senator from Las Vegas, is among the party's top-tier candidates and represents the toughest challenge of Republican Rep. Jon Porter's career. The political winds are against the three-term incumbent. In 2006, he eked out a victory over challenger Tessa Hafen, winning by less than 4,000 votes when voter registration was evenly split. Today Democrats outnumber Republicans by 25,400 voters.

CityLife: Talking Points on Porter-Titus Debate |
By Jason Whited - August 22, 2008
LAS VEGAS - To call Monday night's two-hour candidate debate at the Flamingo Library a textbook example of political butchery might be an overstatement. One thing, however, was certain by evening's end: Hundreds of local voters witnessed the beginning of the end for one sitting congressman.
Moderated by veteran area newsman Jon Ralston -- whose repeated shushing and glares at the audience came off as more schoolmarm than moderator -- the Congregation Ner Tamid-sponsored event promised a warts-and-all look at a dozen candidates for national, state and local office. At least, that's what assistant debate organizer Leslie Jensen was hoping for, just minutes before the candidates began filing into the library auditorium.

Jon Porter on "Face to Face with Jon Ralston"
On August 19th, Congressman Jon Porter appeared on "Face to Face with Jon Ralston" in an attempt to defend his record of supporting oil companies, supporting a failed war in Iraq, and supporting President Bush’s failed policies.
“As usual, Jon Porter misquoted, misled, and misrepresented both his record and Senator Titus’ record,” said campaign spokesman Andrew Stoddard. “Jon Porter is showing how desperate he is, saying anything to get elected. Voters in the Third Congressional District deserve better. They are looking for an independent voice in Washington, and that is Senator Dina Titus."

SUN: Green can fatten Nevadans' wallets, too |
August 20, 2008 - By Phoebe Sweet
LAS VEGAS - The green in “green energy economy” is money as much as environmentalism.
That was the message Tuesday from academics, business leaders, governors and other politicians to more than 1,000 attendees at the National Clean Energy Summit at UNLV.
The tone was set in the morning by T. Boone Pickens, a Texan famous for making billions in the oil industry. He is spending $58 million of his own money touting a plan to use a 4,000-megawatt wind farm to free up natural gas for use by trucks and buses. Pickens said the country is “getting close to a disaster” by spending $700 billion a year on foreign oil.
