R-J: Poll shows Titus leading over Porter |
July 31, 2008 - By Molly Ball
He might be the incumbent, but Republican Rep. Jon Porter may face an uphill battle against his Democratic challenger, state Sen. Dina Titus, according to a new poll conducted for her campaign.
The poll finds Titus leading Porter, 43 percent to 39 percent, among voters in Congressional District 3, which includes most suburban areas of the Las Vegas Valley.
Ten percent of those polled chose one of three third-party candidates, while 7 percent said they were undecided. The poll of 500 likely voters was conducted July 23 to July 28 and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
When the third-party candidates were excluded and respondents were asked to choose only between Titus and Porter, Titus' lead widened. In that scenario, Titus had the support of 50 percent, and Porter had 43 percent.

July 29, 2008 - By Michael J. Mishak
There was something telling in how, for the second time since launching her campaign against three-term Rep. Jon Porter two months ago, state Sen. Dina Titus took to the gas pumps Monday and seized on the issue that has come to shape the 2008 elections: rising energy costs and offshore drilling.
She held back on the rhetoric.
There were no quotable one-liners, no political haymakers. Not even a mention of Porter's name. Just a calm, methodical delivery of a multipoint energy program.

R-J: Titus offers energy fixes |
July 29, 2008 - By Molly Ball
State Sen. Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, summed up her package of energy proposals Monday as "help now, bridge the gap, and plan for the future."
Titus, who is running for Congress, unveiled the first policy paper of her campaign at a service station in Henderson, saying gasoline prices are the number one issue she hears about on the trail.
Congress needs to act, she said, because while the price of gasoline has decreased in recent weeks, "It hasn't come down enough, it fluctuates with the political winds and there's nothing in place to ensure it'll go down further and stay down."

SUN: Titus announces energy plan she says will cut pump prices |
July 28, 2008 - By Michael Mishak
LAS VEGAS - Seizing on public outrage over high gasoline prices, Democratic congressional candidate Dina Titus picked a Lucky Stop gas station in Henderson this morning as the backdrop for the roll-out of her comprehensive energy plan.
She noted that gas prices have fallen recently -- $3.92 a gallon, according to the sign behind her -- but said "there's no guarantee they will stay down."
Her plan, she said, involves short-term and long-term solutions that will "help now, bridge the gab and plan for the future."
