The Virginia Informer - Interview with Congresswoman Dina Titus

By Laura Visochek
March 4, 2009

The Virginia Informer: How did your William and Mary education prepare you for a lifetime of service?

Congresswoman Titus: Well, [my William and Mary education] fostered my interest in the field of politics and after I went on to graduate school and to teach politics, it seemed so natural that I would get into it.  But also, just the inspirational side of being in the cradle of American democracy, it's hard to not be inspired.  Even now, whe I walk outside and see the Capitol Building in any light of day, that kind of tugs at my heart.  I think that feeling goes back to those days when I was a student at William and Mary.

Congresswoman Dina Titus Sworn-In on Grandfather's Greek Bible

By Andrew Manatos

July - August, 2009
With her hand on her grandfather's Greek Bible, Congresswoman Dina Titus was sworn-in by the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in January 2009 to become a member of Congress from Nevada.
This symbolic gesture was Dina's way of reaching back to include her Hellenic and Orthodox heritage in this particularly meaningful moment.  It was the fulfillment of the American Dream for so man Hellenes who left Greece.
Dina's swearing-in raises the percentage of members of Congress from Nevada with Greek ancestry to 66 percent. Dina joined Las Vegas' Congresswoman Shelley Berkley whose mother's family comes from the Jewish community in Thessaloniki, Greece.
This percentage is extraordinarily high in light of the fact that Americans of Greek ancestry represents only .5 percent of the population of both America and Nevada and just one percent of the House of Representatives and Senate.
